ADVICE & SOLUTIONS

FIXING TILES ON WOODEN FLOORING

ADVICES PREPARATION APPLICATION FINISHING

Wood panels, wood strip flooring, traditional parquet flooring: solutions adapted to each constraint.

• PRIVATE AREAS: APARTMENT BLOCKS, PRIVATE HOUSING, ETC. • PUBLIC AREAS: OFFICES, CLASSROOMS (UPPER FLOORS)…PUBLIC TOILETS ARE NOT SUITABLE

Recommendations :

• Always check the sound condition and the appropriateness of the wooden flooring to receive the ceramic covering.

APPLICATION AREAS

INTERIOR FLOORS :

• In private premises, UPEC U3, P2, E2* (maximum) classified areas without a floor trap with CERAMFLEX, CERMIFACE, CERMIPHONIK, CERMIPHONE PLK, CERMIPROOF, CERMITANCHE, CERMICRYL. E.g.: Apartment blocks, individual housing, etc.

• In public premises, UPEC U3, P3, E2* (maximum) classified areas, only use CERMIFACE. E.g.: Offices, classrooms (on upper floors). Public toilets are excluded.

• Humid rooms in private premises with wooden flooring are classified E3 (water sensitive substrate).

SUITABLE SUBSTRATES

1) Mainly CTB.H grade wooden panel flooring or equivalent with grooves and tongues of 22, 25, 27 mm thickness or CTB.X in alternate partitions.

2) Wooden strip flooring on floor battens or floor joists.

3) Other substrates:

- Traditional parquet flooring on floor battens, providing it is in sound condition. The following types of flooring are not suitable for fixing ceramic coverings:

- wooden flooring on under floor space or slab floors

- floating parquet flooring

- flooring laid on a resilient layer: cork, Phaltex (unstable).

NB: Wooden staircases. Please consult us.

SUITABLE COVERINGS:

The coverings should be compatible with the DESVRES system used. UPEC P3 classified stoneware coverings should preferably be used

- 7 mm minimum for 20 x 20 formats

- 8 mm minimum for 30 x 30 formats.

Suitable formats: from 100 to 1100 cm2 depending on the system.

PREPARATION OF THE WOODEN FLOORING

The wooden flooring must be suitable for fixing a ceramic covering. With reference to the NFP 63-203-1 paragraph 3-451 (DTU 51.3) and the directives of the CTBA (French Wood and Wood Furnishing Technical Centre), it is important to comply with the following:

• The centre to centre distance between floor battens or joists: maximum 45 cm (if the spaces are greater, fix crosspieces every 40 cm or so, to support the panels).

• Use CTB.H panels at least 22 mm thick with grooves-tongues, and lay them with dry joints in a staggered fashion, knocking the male and female sections into place and bonding them where they fit together. Fasten them down every 15 to 30 cm, depending on the supporting system, with stainless steel or similar screws that are 2.5 times the thickness of the panel or 2 overlapping layers of CTB.X panels 12 mm thick.

Other instructions: consult the NFP 63-203-1 (DTU 51.3), the CTBA guidelines and the CPT specification n° 3529.

SURFACE PREPARATION :

IMPORTANT: The flooring must be rigid (stable when walked on), not flex and be well screwed down. The active deflection must be less than 1/600th of the span. Reinforce the fastenings, if necessary.

• The under face of the flooring must be well ventilated; check that the ventilation is sufficient.

• Check that the load bearing structures can support the increased load and change of occupancy of the room.

• Existing parquet flooring: completely strip off by sanding any dirt, wax or varnish until clean wood is reached and then thoroughly remove dust.

• The flooring should have an even surface, without any lips that could adversely affect the adhesion of the covering systems. Humid rooms in private premises: (bathrooms, WCs, kitchens)

• Wood must be protected: use CERMIPROOF, CERMITANCHE or CERMICRYL.

• There must be a mechanical ventilation system.

• In the case of superimposed humid rooms, a vapour barrier should be applied to the ceiling in order to protect the wooden flooring from humidity.

FIXING THE TILING

Refer to the Technical Data Sheet of the system used: CERMIFACE, CERMIPHONIK or CERMIPHONE PLK.

In addition, ensure in particular a peripheral joint of 3-5 mm is allowed for (self-adhesive PERIPHERAL JOINT from the DESVRES range, CERMISIL elastomeric mastic).

• Allow for control joints on the surfaces every 20-30 m2.

• Allow for inter-tile joints of sufficient width:

- 4 mm minimum for small format tiles (< 200 cm2)

- 5-6 mm minimum for tiles larger than 200 cm².
