    ADHESIVES FAQ
1 - I want to tile a wood panel floor in my upstairs bathroom
The wood floor must be stable, rigid, not flex, be well screwed down, ventilated on the underside and made of CTBH wood panels at least 22 mm thick. An under tile damp proof protection system (SPEC) is required; use CERMICRYL with CERMIFILM  primer and AR 12 reinforcement strips in the angles. Fix the tiles with CERMIPLUS XL FLEX excellent performance adhesive mortar and finish the inter-tile joints with CERMIJOINT SOUPLE / JOINT SOUPLE. Please refer to Advice Sheet n° 44 and Technical Data Sheets n° 101, 300, 420 and 720.
2 - I want to cover my wall earthenware tiles with new tiling
Make sure that the old earthenware tiling adheres well and wash it with a caustic detergent to thoroughly degrease the surface, rinse and dry. Score or scratch the surface to improve the adhesive bond. Fix earthenware tiling with CERMIFIXCERMIFLEX ALG or CERMIFIX HP ready to use adhesives. Fix ceramic stoneware tiling (low porosity) with for example CERMIPLUS XL FLEX adhesive mortar. Please refer to Advice Sheet n° 41 and Technical Data Sheets n° 420, 510, 515 and 520.
3 - I want to fix tiling on an interior floor with an underfloor heating system
Whatever the system, comply with the procedure for switching on the heating according to the regulations in force and the manufacturer’s AT technical authorisation. Switch off the heating 2 days before applying the tiles and switch back on 2 days after. Use C2S1 certified adhesive mortars such as CERMIPLUS XL FLEXCERMIFLEX, CERMIFLEX ALG or CERMIDUR. Allow for control joints of the substrate and peripheral joints. Finish the inter-tile joints with for example CERMIJOINT SOUPLE / JOINT SOUPLE, particularly recommended for floors with concealed underfloor heating. Please refer to Advice Sheet n° 12 and Technical Data Sheets n° 610, 620, 630, 635 and 720.
4 - I want to protect the walls of my shower cabin against water infiltration
In the case of a shower for private use with gypsum blocks or waterproofed plasterboard as support, before fixing the tiles apply CERMICRYL under tile damp proof protection system (SPEC) with CERMIFILM  primer and AR 12 reinforcement strips in the angles. Once the SPEC is fully dry, fix earthenware tiling with CERMIFIX adhesive or with CERMIPLUS XL FLEX adhesive mortar in the case of low porosity stoneware tiling. Finish the inter-tile joints with for example CERMIJOINT COLOR / JOINT COLORE-JOINT COLORE. Please refer to Advice Sheet n° 66 and Technical Data Sheets n° 101, 300, 510, 420 and 700.
5 - I want to cover existing tiling on an interior floor without removing it
Check the sound condition and good adhesion of the existing tiling. Remove any loose or non adherent tiles, fill the empty spaces the day before fixing the new tiles with the adhesive mortar used. Thoroughly clean the existing covering by brushing with a caustic detergent in order to eliminate all traces of oil, grease or gloss, followed by thorough rinsing and drying. Directly fix the tiling with adhesive mortars such as CERMIPLUS XL FLEX, CERMIPLUS XL FLEX XL FLEX or CERMIFLEX, allowing for joints in the substrate and peripheral joints. Finish the inter-tile joints with for example CERMIJOINT COLOR / JOINT COLORE or CERMIJOINT TX / JOINT LARGE. Please refer to Advice Sheet n° 41 and Technical Data Sheets n° 420, 620, 630, 700 and 702.
6 - I want to tile my terrace
The concrete or cement terrace must be sound, dry, clean, dust-free and cohesive (i.e. not crumbly). Check that there is a minimum slope of 1.5 cm per metre as required by regulations in order to enable the run-off of water. Clean the surface with a high pressure water jet and leave to dry. Fix the tiling with adhesive mortars such as CERMISOL, CERMIPLUS XL FLEXCERMIPLUS XL FLEX XL FLEX, CERMIFLEX, allowing for substrate control joints as well as an abutment peripheral joint. 7 - I want to tile a wood floor in a private dry room
The wood floor must be rigid (stable when walked on), not flex, be well ventilated underneath, be made of CTBH wood panels at least 22 mm thick or CTBX cross laminated panels. Wooden floors over underfloor space or slabs are not suitable. Sand down existing parquet flooring until clean wood appears and thoroughly remove dust. Directly fix the tiling with CERAMFLEX two component adhesive mortar, or apply the CERMIFACE bond breaking system using CERMIPLUS XL FLEX or CERMIFLEX to fix the tiles. Allow for control joints every 20 to 30 m² and every 6 m in corridors as well as peripheral joints. Finish the inter-tile joints (5 mm minimum) with CERMIJOINT SOUPLE / JOINT SOUPLE. Please refer to Advice Sheet n° 44 and Technical Data Sheets n° 600, 820, 420, 630 and 720.
8 - I want to tile a floor that has been painted
Check the existing paint is in sound condition and free of blisters, flaking or peeling. Carry out a cross-hatch adhesion test of the paint with a cutter in the central part of the room and in areas with heavy traffic (accesses, etc.). The adhesion of the paint is considered as good if 80 % of the cross-hatched area remains adherent. Wash the paint with a caustic detergent, rinse and dry, then sand down to obtain a scratched, matt surface followed by careful removal of dust. Fix the tiling using adhesive mortars such as CERMIPLUS XL FLEXCERMIFLEX or CERMIFLEX ALG with CERMIGRIP adhesion primer, and finish the joints between the tiles with for example CERMIJOINT COLOR / JOINT COLORE or CERMIJOINT TX / JOINT LARGE. Please refer to Advice Sheet n° 43 and Technical Data Sheets n°420, 630, 635, 700 and 702.
9 - How can I calculate the consumption of jointing adhesive for a job?
Consumption depends on the dimension of the tiles, their thickness, the width of the joints and the density of the product used: Add the length and the width in cm – Multiply the length of the tile by its width in cm – Then divide the 1st figure obtained by the 2nd – Take this result and multiply it by the width of the joint in mm – Take this new result and multiply it by the thickness of the tile in mm – Finally, multiply this last value obtained by the density of the product (in general 0.17) in order to obtain the consumption in kg/m² and add a margin of around 10 %.
10 - How do I use CERMILATEX adjuvant?
CERMILATEX is an admixture resin that reinforces the mechanical performance of the tiling joints and improves their waterproofing. Mix the jointing mortar (powder) with a mixture of at least 1/3 CERMILATEX and 2/3 water with respect to the mixing ratio indicated on the packaging until a homogeneous paste is obtained. Please refer to Technical Data Sheet n° 120.
11 - I want to tile a ready-to-tile receiver (made of extruded polystyrene covered with a glass fibre reinforced cement mortar)
The receiver must be installed in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions and be properly fixed down, stable, etc. For small format tiles (enamelware, vitreous glass, pebbles, etc.), use epoxy resin mortar for fixing the tiles as well as for the joints. For tile formats greater than 5 x 5 cm, use for example CERMIPLUS XL FLEX or CERMIFLEX ALG adhesive mortar and finish the joints with CERMIJOINT COLOR / JOINT COLORE admixed with CERMILATEX (1/3 CERMILATEX resin and 2/3 water). Please refer to Advice Sheet n° 68 and Technical Data Sheets n° 420, 635, 730, 700 and 120.
12 - How to apply epoxy resin based joints?
Be careful to mix the two component EPOSOL or EPOGLASS epoxy mortar in the correct proportions, as indicated on the packaging. Fill the joints using a stiff rubber squeegee or a plastic spreader and remove any excess. Immediately clean the tiles with a damp sponge, using warm water with a few drops of dishwashing liquid or use as an additive in the washing water. Please refer to Technical Data Sheet n° 730.
13 - I want to install acoustic insulation before fixing the tiling

In order to comply with the latest French sound proofing regulations (NRA) in new work and renovation, use CERMIPHONE PLK PLUS panel system or CERMIPHONIK thin screed roll system as per Technical Data Sheets n° 810, 830 and 835.

    14 - I want to tile a swimming pool
Make sure that the concrete or cement substrate is dry, clean and dust-free. Clean the concrete with a high pressure water jet and leave to dry. If it is necessary to reinforce the water proofing of the substrate, use CERMIPROOF under tile liquid damp proof protection system (SEL). Fix the tiles with CERMIPLUS XL FLEX excellent performance adhesive mortar using double spreading. For finishing the inter-tile joints and depending on the more or less aggressive character of the water and the frequency of cleaning, use the appropriate jointing mortar, CERMIJOINT COLOR / JOINT COLORE, CERMIJOINT HRC / CERMICOLOR HRC or EPOGLASS. Wait 7 days before bringing into contact with water. Please refer to Advice Sheet n° 14 and Technical Data Sheets n° 700, 730, 740 and 420.
15 - I want to fix tiling on an anhydrite screed
To fix tiling on this specific type of calcium sulphate based substrate, it is imperative to procure the CSTB AT technical authorisation of the manufacturer of the screed and to follow the directives (drying, sanding-dust removal, heating up procedure, control of residual moisture, compliance with jointing techniques, etc.). Use certified adhesive mortars with a primer on calcium sulphate based screeds such as CERMIPLUS XL FLEXCERMIPLUS XL FLEX XL FLEX, CERMIFLEX, etc. or CERMIDRITE SP (without primer). For finishing the joints between tiles, use CERMIJOINT SOUPLE / JOINT SOUPLE. Please refer to Advice Sheet n° 65 and Technical Data Sheets n° 420, 460, 620, 630 and 720.
16 - I want to fix thin wall facings on exterior walls
Suitable substrates for directly fixing facings on exterior walls are cement based finishing coats, concrete, or CSIV classified single coat waterproofing renders. Unsuitable substrates are existing paints, existing ceramic coverings, wood and untreated masonry work. Clean the substrate and thoroughly remove dust. Fix the facings with  CERMIPLUS XL FLEX XL FLEX, CERMIFLEXCERMIFLEX ALG or CERMIDUR adhesive mortars and finish the inter-tile joints with for example CERMIJOINT SOUPLE / JOINT SOUPLE. Please refer to Advice Sheet n° 11 and Technical Data Sheets n° 610, 620, 630, 635 and 720.
17 - I want to apply a floor levelling compound on a wood floor
The wood floor must be rigid (stable when walked on), well fixed down, not flex and be ventilated underneath. Wood floors over underfloor spaces or slabs are not suitable. Sand the existing wood floor until clean wood appears and thoroughly remove dust. Use RAGRENOV S30 fibre based levelling mortar in a single pass over CERMIGRIP adhesion primer. Please refer to Advice Sheet n° 44 and Technical Data Sheets n° 102 and 230.
18 - How should traces of cement be cleaned from tiling?
